Storing coffee beans is a common question we receive here at Lanna Coffee. And for good reason. If you're going to pay a premium for specialty-grade coffee beans, it makes good sense to try to preserve the freshness and flavor for as long as possible. While we don't necessarily recommend carrying more than a few weeks worth of coffee, although it is certainly tempting, here are a few simple things to help your coffee stay fresh longer.
The biggest enemies to your coffees continued freshness are air, moisture, heat, and light. Each of these conditions within your environment can have an adverse impact on your coffee. We recommend storing your coffee in a dark and cool location. By doing so, you reduce the likelihood of heat and light playing a factor. Storing your coffee beans in their original packaging (our packaging is resealable) and in a kitchen cabinet is one way you can store your coffee beans.
If you're going to be purchasing coffee beans for longer than a few weeks, you may want to invest in a storage canister with an airtight seal. Oxygen, or the exposure of your coffee to it, is the biggest cause of stale coffee beans. A canister with an airtight seal, particularly one that helps expel oxygen within the canister, is the best way to prevent oxidation of your coffee beans and preserve its freshness.
A common recommendation we see is to freeze your coffee beans if you won't be using them quickly. While this is an option, we don't recommend it because moisture is another contributor to aging coffee beans. Your coffee can absorb moisture, not to mention odors, from the environment which of course isn't going to lead to an enjoyable cup of coffee.
Regardless of how you store your coffee beans, in general it's a good idea to consume your coffee as quickly as possible after roasting. For our part, we roast our coffees weekly to make sure you receive the freshest specialty-grade coffee beans.
